The book by Naomi Wolf, "Beauty Myth" comes up with a theory as to why this is, if you're interested. Basically, patriarch wants to represent women as submissive, subservient, so tries to get her to physically weaken herself to a size 4 (USA size 0) in order to be 'attractive'.
